🔦 Spotlight: Joel Thorstensson, co-founder of 3Box Labs
In this spotlight, we feature Joel Thorstensson whose journey began on a farm in rural Sweden and has now flourished into co-founding 3Box Labs and creating the Ceramic Network.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My journey with technology started at the farm, where I grew up with my family in rural Sweden. Farm life requires deep technical knowledge and is very value-aligned with open source, as can be seen in the “right to repair” movement. I went to university at Chalmers in Gothenburg, where I studied software engineering and physics.
Shortly after Ethereum was announced in 2014, I got excited and ended up doing a bachelors project which demonstrated a decentralized computation marketplace on top of the then testnet-only Ethereum network. I went on to complete my masters in physics focused on complex systems, where I explored many concepts relevant to the space such as agent based modeling, machine learning, and dynamical systems.
Now, I’m a co-founder of 3Box Labs and co-creator of Ceramic Network.
How did you get into Web3?
In 2015, I joined Consensys for an internship. This was at the time Ethereum was still in testnet. Back then, a lot less tooling existed, but it was apparent that data needed to live beyond just on-chain. In 2016, I joined the uPort project, which was a “spoke” at Consensys. This is where I met my co-founders and where 3Box Labs was first created. In 2018 we raised our first round and started building what eventually became Ceramic.
What advice would you give to someone joining Web3?
Try to cut through all noise by building a deep understanding of the fundamentals of the technology. The best way to do this is to focus on what you are curious about. Try to understand why this technology matters and why it matters to you. Also bring your unique perspective into the mix, the space needs more divergent approaches to grow!
What challenges or rough edges would you like to see solved in Web3?
More novel use cases. Not just recreating Web2 applications on Web3 infrastructure. This technology has the ability to reshape how we govern global economics. Ideally we don’t just recreate our current economic system in a digital and decentralized environment, but we create new ways of trusting each other. There are many efforts around funding common resources and public goods. I hope that we can find some of these mechanisms that work and scale.
What are your favorite podcasts or books?
Currently diving into reading about hermeticism. In general I like podcasts about human health and optimization, technology, and complex systems.
Tell us something you like to do for fun.
I’m learning to play the hang drum!
